Several common herbs and flowers are among the many plants that keep spiders away from your Pacific Northwest home. The thing all of these plants have in common is a strong, aromatic scent. Spiders don’t like the smells of these plants, so they leave and find somewhere else to live.
Herb Plants That Keep Spiders Away
These herbs can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill or other area with plenty of light as well as outdoors during their growing season. In addition to keeping spiders away, fresh herbs also can be used in cooking. Win-win! Some of aromatic herbs that spiders don’t like are:
- Basil
- Lavender
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Chives
- Lemon Balm
- Dill
- Lemon Verbena
Flowering Plants That Keep Spiders Away
Just as spiders don’t like the smell of herbs, there are some flowers that they don’t like, either. These flowers include:
Chrysanthemums bloom into fall and early winter, while marigolds grow best and flower in the warm months. If you plan your garden right, you can have nearly year-round spider repellant AND vibrant color with a combination of these flowers.
Other Plants That Spiders Don’t Like
Other aromatic plants that keep spiders away include citronella (a grassy perennial), eucalyptus (small varieties can be grown in pots and/or kept as shrubs), and citrus. Just as with the herbs and flowers mentioned above, it is the smell of these plants that spiders dislike.
When Plants Aren’t Enough
